Shop smart across China
China is a shopper's paradise, from centuries-old bazaars to gleaming megamalls. In Beijing, the markets of Panjiayuan and the silk street of Xiushui offer antiques, calligraphy, and handicrafts; Shanghai's Tianzifang and Nanjing Road blend boutique design with world-famous labels; and Guangzhou's wholesale markets supply everything imaginable.
For authentic souvenirs, look for Chinese tea, jade and silk, porcelain and lacquerware, and traditional arts such as paper-cutting and embroidery. Remember that antique items over a certain age cannot be exported, so always request receipts and certification for high-value purchases.
Payment is easy with Alipay and WeChat Pay, and many shops now accept international cards. Bargaining is expected at markets — start at about half the asking price and negotiate with a smile. Tax refunds for international visitors are available at major duty-free stores and airports.
